Winlink Traffic Flows

The table below shows the five (5) ways that traffic can be conducted via the Winlink digital radio communications network. Note that individual Ham Users must select the PMBO they will use to send and collect messages. Individual Users may be only miles away from each other or halfway around the world.

USERS PMBO CMBO PMBO USERS

1. Ham User to Ham User

Ham User sends email to another Ham User, with a Winlink email address, via radio to nearby PMBO   ►   PMBO forwards email via Internet to CMBO         

                                   ►

CMBO forwards email via Internet to all PMBO that the addressee has logged into during last 90 days ► PMBO holds message for the other Ham User in Ham User's mailbox for 21 days                            ► Ham User collects email by radio from PMBO

                                   

2. Ham User to/from Non-ham User

Ham User sends email to Non-ham, with Internet email address, via radio to nearby PMBO              ► PMBO forwards email via Internet to CMBO         

                                   ►
CMBO forwards email via Internet to addressee

                                   ►


(Not involved)

Non-ham collects email from Internet Service Provider 
                                    ●

Non-Ham sends email to Ham User, with Winlink email address, via the Internet to CMBO          ►

         
(Not involved)

CMBO forwards email via Internet to all PMBO that the addressee has logged into during last 90 days ► PMBO holds message for  Ham User for 21 days

3. Ham User to CMBO or APRS

Ham User sends email requesting catalogue item from CMBO, via radio to nearby PMBO              
                                   ►
PMBO forwards email via Internet to CMBO

CMBO accesses Winlink catalogue or Internet to collect requested item and sends requested item back to PMBO                     ► PMBO holds message for  the requesting Ham User in Ham User's mailbox for 21 days                            
                                   ►
Ham User collects email by radio from PMBO      

                                   
                                  

Ham User sends Position Report to APRS system via radio to nearest PMBO  ►

PMBO forwards Position Report via Internet to CMBO                         ► CMBO forwards Position Report, to APRS website, FindU and/or Pangolin   ►


(Not involved)

APRS displays on Internet. Family & Friends can view position on Internet        ●
