Now a few additional words about the potential users of
Winlink. They can be placed in two categories:
Radio Amateurs: These participants, because they send and receive their messages via amateur radio, must be licensed radio amateurs and have their mobile communication system with them onboard (sea, land, or in the air). Most would be mobile, like yachtsmen, and some will be temporarily or long term in the same position, like humanitarian aid workers or missionaries; and Those without amateur radio licenses: This includes everyone else - anywhere in the world: (a) with an Internet email address; and (b) authorized by the traveler to make email contact via Winlink. Such authorization is given by the traveler, normally only to family and close friends, by providing them their Winlink email address. It means, for example, that those at home and fellow yacht club members can reach the traveler by email. Even though Winlink employs powerful Spam controls, Radio Amateurs are advised to not make public or prominently display on correspondence or business or boat cards their Winlink email address.
