Winlink, in addition to providing the communication system, also provides a very extensive series of Products that are of interest to Users. These are summarized on this slide. Many proposals are being advanced for providing even more products to Users. For example, in respect of Australia there is keen interest in Winlink providing information about road and weather conditions for the inland areas frequented by outback travelers.

Delivery of Products works as follows: In response to a User Request for an item that is in Winlink’s Catalogue (Product Menu) the CMBO collects the requested information from the Internet and, if necessary and possible, compresses it to a size suitable for radio transmission. It will then send this to the Mail Box of the User who requested the information. Sometimes this is almost instantaneous, sometimes minutes but nearly always with 15 minutes or so. It should be understood that Winlink can provide such information only when it is reliably available on the Internet and it is, of course, only as accurate as the source.

A constraining factor for Winlink’s Product range is that the Winlink Catalogue that can be requested from the CMBO and then downloaded to the onboard computer is already very large. At this stage it already includes about 700 products. A list with that many items takes a long time to download even when using Pactor III. For that reason the Winlink Development Team is reluctant to add, at this stage, additional Products to its Catalogue. This is something that will be addressed in the redesign of the Winlink topography.
