For those exploring:
Thankyou for at least taking the "Quick Tour". In just ten bullet points,
here's the story:
- Winlink is of interest only to those who are, or have family or friends,
in remote areas;
- In particular, it helps recreational cruisers at sea, outback travelers and those in
inland areas;
- It also helps those who stayed at home but like to stay in touch with the
traveler;
- Messages may include email, photographs, weather charts, position reports
and emergency alerts;
- Messages are sent over the amateur radio bands and, for part of the way,
via the Internet;
- Those who have Internet email can send messages to the traveler via the
Internet to a Winlink "post office";
- The Traveler can collect these messages, and send his own, from and to the
"post office" via amateur radio;
- To use an amateur radio, the User has to be an appropriately qualified
amateur radio operator;
- The Operators of Winlink "post offices" (there are about 40 around
the world), are also qualified hams; and
- In accordance with amateur radio rules, Winlink services are provided
to Users free of cost.
