Becoming a Winlink PMBO

Operating a PMBO is one of the highest levels of public service a radio amateur can aspire to. The operator will dedicate his or her amateur radio station equipment, time and energy, and intellectual effort to establish and operate a Winlink PMBO, 24 hours per day for 365 days of the year.

It requires especially dedicated professionals to make this commitment. There are fairly strict requirements, including fulltime interfacing of the PMBO's computer to the Internet.

There are already more than 45 PMBOs around the world. More are being added. There are already three Winlink stations in Australia with another one to get on the air soon. Until such time that Australia, through WICEN, will take digital radio communications seriously for disaster and emergency relief operations few, if any, new Winlink stations will be required in Australia. However, it is Winlink's policy to always have a few extra stations operating so that if one station is down for weather or other reasons, there will always another station that Users my contact.
