Navigating a Website

This page is for those who like some assistance with finding their way around a website (it's called navigating):

  • BROWSERS: Websites are viewed (or visited) by using a browser. Browsers are computer software programs specifically designed for "surfing" or exploring the Internet. There are many browsers but Microsoft Explorer® or Netscape® are used by the majority of visitors to this website. Most websites will function properly only with browser versions later than 3.0. These will support shared borders and graphics. This website works best with MS Explorer®. Not all features may work properly on other browsers.

  • SUPPLEMENTAL SOFTWARE: Some features offered by websites may require the appropriate additional software on your computer, for example, like Adobe© to read text in PDF. If not on your computer, have someone help you to download it from the Internet, often for free, or buy it at a software store.

  • THE HOME PAGE: A website comprises a "Home Page", that's the one that shows up first when visit a website like AussieWinlink. The Home Page has "links". These are words or phrases that are underlined or shown in a different color, for example: Homepage. Sometimes links are in graphics, like pictures. By moving your computer mouse (it's called "point") the cursor on link  and clicking the left button of your mouse once (called "click"), the chosen page will appear. It's therefore called "Point and Click".

  • LINKS: You can easily go deeper into any website by following successive links. You can also quickly backtrack. For example, pointing and clicking on "Up" in a menu on the top or bottom of a page, will take you back to the next higher level and, likewise, clicking on  "Home" will take you back to the Home Page.

  • SCROLLING: Most web pages contain more text than can be displayed on a single computer screen. To read the full text, place your cursor on the "down" button on the scrolling bar at the extreme right of the page. By clicking repeatedly on the down button, the text will scroll up. The scroll the text down again, click on the "up" button on the scroll bar. Some computer mice have a small rotating wheel in the middle for scrolling up and down.

  • BACK TRACKING: Some links will take you to another website located elsewhere on the Internet. To return to the website where you started, like AussieWinlink, click the "Back" button on your browser. It is normally shown near the top left hand corner on the browser.

  • ACCESS SPEED: Depending on the speed of your computer, modem and the connection speed to your Internet Service Provider (ISP) it might take a little while before the requested "Page" or "website" loads and becomes viewable on your screen. To test this, "point and click" now on the following link to return to the Home Page> Homepage
