Winlink Announces New PMBO

Steve (K4CJX), Administrator for the Winlink Development Team (WDT), announced the activation of the first of three new Winlink Participating Mail Box Offices (PMBOs) that are joining the global network.

The station is located in Las Palmas on the Canary Islands. What is particularly important is that this particular station is sponsored by the local "Radio Club Cultural Gran Canaria", showing that clubs - even in the smallest of places - can band together to provide a social service. This support is much like the two Winlink PMBOs that are sponsored by the California Yacht Club and the San Diego Yacht Club, respectively, in the US.

The Canary Islands are in a particularly important strategic location. The new PMBO provides improved coverage to the north and mid-Atlantic Ocean and, of course, to North Africa. The following graphic shows the location:

Below, for those who like to contact the station on their cross-Atlantic or cross-Continental travels, is the official announcement including operating frequencies:

Australia still remains the largest geographic area in the developed world that is underrepresented in the Winlink global network. Opportunities are still available for early pioneers to establish a Winlink PMBO on Australia's southeast coast. It is hoped that additional individual volunteers will come forward. Alternatively, Amateur radio clubs or boating clubs in the states of Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria or South Australia could join up as club-sponsored Winlink stations.
